Installing Compiled Dictionaries

  1. Download a compiled dictionary. As of today there are dictionaries for Breton, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, German, Greek, Esperanto, Faroese, French, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Ukrainian. You will need StuffIt Expander to decompress the file.

  2. Choose the Library folder where you are going to install the dictionary. Use
    /Network/Library
If you want the dictionary to be available to all users on the local network.
    /Library
If you want the dictionary to be available to all users on the local machine.
    ~/Library
If you want the dictionary to be available only to you. Here ~ stands for your home folder.
  3. Create a subfolder Aspell in the Application Support subfolder of the Library folder you have selected:

    Library/Application Support/Aspell

  4. Move the dictionary file into the Application Support/Aspell subfolder of the Library folder you have selected.

For example, if I am installing the Russian dictionary into the common Library folder the location of the dictionary file should be

    /Library/Application Support/Aspell/Russian.dictionary

  5. You are done. You may now enable the dictionary in the Dictionaries tab.
