Compiling and Installing Dictionaries
Note You need to have Apple
Developer Tools (specifically you need make) installed to add other
dictionaries.
-
Download a dictionary package file from the Aspell
main site. As of today they have dictionaries for Breton, Catalan,
Czech, Danish, Dutch, German, Esperanto, Faroese, French, Italian,
Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish. You
will need StuffIt Expander to
decompress the file.
- Choose the Library folder where you are going to install the dictionary. Use
- /Network/Library
- If you want the dictionary to be available to all users on the local network.
- /Library
- If you want the dictionary to be available to all users on the local machine.
- ~/Library
- If you want the dictionary to be available only to you. Here ~ stands for your home folder.
Create a subfolder Aspell in the Application Support subfolder of the Library folder you have selected.
Move the dictionary folder into the Application Support/Aspell subfolder of the Library folder you have selected.
Open the System Preferences application and select the Spelling panel. Select Advanced tab in the Spelling panel and click on the Build dictionary button. It will prompt you for the dictionary folder you have just moved into the Application Support folder. Find that folder and click Select. Now you may need to wait a few minutes while cocoAspell builds the dictionary.
You are done. You may now enable the dictionary in the Dictionaries tab.
